Reviewing a game with KataGo
Every finished game has a Review button. It opens the game at the first move with KataGo's reading of each position: the win-rate bar and graph, the score estimate, and a mistakes list — worst first, each entry a link to the move it happened on.
Suggestions and playouts
Coloured dots mark the engine's suggested moves, best in green, each showing its win rate. Hover over a suggestion to watch its predicted continuation play out on the board. Both can be switched off with the checkboxes, and the strength selector trades speed for depth — the fastest level is the default; your choice is remembered.
Exploring variations
Click any empty point to try a move. KataGo analyses the new position exactly as it does the game's own, and you can keep going — both sides, as deep as you like, with as many branches as you like. The move tree below the panels maps everything: the game across the top, each variation hanging beneath the move it answers. Click any stone in it to jump there. Positions with messages carry an M; positions with board marks carry a small triangle.
Annotating
The toolbar above the board switches what a click does:
- Move (default) — play out a variation, as above.
- Triangle, square, circle — drop that shape on any point or stone.
- A / 1 — label points with letters or numbers. Clicking a label again lifts it, and freed letters and numbers are reused before new ones.
One mark per point: a different tool simply replaces what's there. You can also write a message tied to the position on screen from the Messages panel.
Yours alone, and yours to keep
Variations, notes, and marks are private to you — two people reviewing the same game never see each other's work — and they're all still there when you come back. Download SGF exports the game with your variations, comments, and marks, readable in any Go editor; Discard my review wipes your annotations and returns the game as it was played.
